STYLE GUIDE · DRESS CODES

Semi-formal, without the guesswork.

Semi-formal means dressed up but not formal: a midi dress, a dressy trouser suit or a suit and tie. It's one of the most common wedding dress codes, and it changes a little between daytime and evening.

THE QUICK ANSWER

  • Dress route: a midi or knee-length dress, a wrap dress, a jumpsuit or a smart trouser suit.
  • Trouser route: a suit in a good fabric; a tie in the evening, sometimes optional by day.
  • Daytime: lighter colours and fabrics. Evening: darker colours and a little more polish.
  • Skip: jeans, trainers, beachwear and floor-length ballgowns.

What semi-formal actually means

Semi-formal sits in the middle of the dress-code ladder. It's smarter than smart casual or dressy casual, and less formal than black tie. The Knot calls it the most popular wedding dress code. For semi-formal weddings it suggests midi dresses, wrap dresses or jumpsuits "with quiet elegance", and a suit and tie in a nice fabric.

The Emily Post Institute splits the code by time of day. In the daytime that means a dressy afternoon dress or trouser suit, or a dark suit or blazer with a tie. In the evening it means a cocktail dress or dressy trouser suit, or a dark suit. In practice, semi-formal and cocktail attire are close neighbours.

The dress route in detail

  • Length: knee to midi length is the safe zone. Minis can look too casual at some events, and floor length can look too formal.
  • Fabric: crepe, silk, satin, a fine knit or a quality cotton for daytime. Avoid jersey that looks like loungewear.
  • Separates work: a silk blouse with tailored trousers, or a midi skirt with a fine knit, is fully correct.
  • Shoes: heels are optional. Block heels, loafers or smart flats suit outdoor and long events.
  • Layer: a tailored jacket or wrap covers shoulders for religious ceremonies and keeps you warm after sunset.

The trouser route in detail

  • The core: a well-fitting suit. Navy and charcoal work everywhere; lighter greys, blues and tans suit daytime.
  • The tie: expected in the evening. At a relaxed daytime event a crisp open collar can work, so follow the host's hints.
  • No suit? A blazer with contrasting tailored trousers works at many daytime semi-formal events.
  • Shoes: leather oxfords, derbies or loafers, cleaned and polished.

Semi-formal wedding attire

"Semi formal wedding attire" is searched about 49,500 times a month in the US, more than any other wedding dress code. A few extra rules apply:

  • Avoid white, ivory and anything that could look bridal.
  • Check the couple's wedding website, which often explains the dress code in their own words.
  • For a religious ceremony, bring a layer that covers your shoulders.
  • Match the time: daytime is lighter and brighter, and evening is darker and more polished.

Build it from what you own

  1. Your best dress plus a jacket. Swap everyday shoes for polished ones and add one piece of jewellery.
  2. Silk top and tailored trousers. One of our colour combinations keeps it cohesive.
  3. Your interview suit, lightened. Wear a lighter shirt or a softer tie for a daytime event.

Try it in the outfit studio with your weather.

Quick questions

Is semi-formal the same as business attire? Close for the trouser route, but semi-formal events allow more colour and personality.

Can I wear black? Yes, especially in the evening. Add colour or texture for a celebration.

Can I wear a jumpsuit? Yes, in a dressy fabric with polished shoes.

Are jeans ever OK? No. Even dark jeans read as smart casual.
