THE QUICK ANSWER
- Homecoming: usually semi-formal. A dark suit (tie optional) or a blazer with chinos.
- Prom: usually black tie optional or formal. A tux, or a dark suit with a tie.
- Fit beats price. A cheap suit that fits looks better than an expensive one that doesn't.
- Coordinate, don't copy: pick up one color from your date's outfit in your tie, pocket square or flower.
Start with the dress code
According to Jos. A. Bank, most proms are black tie, black tie optional or semi-formal. Men's Wearhouse describes semi-formal homecoming as a dark suit with the tie optional, or a blazer with chinos. If the ticket or school email doesn't say, ask a student council member, or look at last year's photos.

All-black
- Black suit
- Black shirt or crisp white shirt
- No tie or a slim black tie, black shoes

Prom outfits for guys
Classic black tux
- Black tux with satin lapels
- White dress shirt, black bow tie
- Black patent or polished oxfords
The one that always works for black tie.
Midnight navy tux
- Navy tux with black lapels
- White shirt, black bow tie
- Black shoes
Looks richer than black in photos.
Velvet jacket
- Velvet dinner jacket (burgundy, green or navy)
- Black tux trousers
- Black bow tie, black shoes
Best for winter proms.
White dinner jacket
- Ivory jacket
- Black trousers
- Black bow tie, black shoes
A classic for warm-weather or outdoor proms.
Dark suit, done right
- Charcoal or navy suit
- White shirt, silk tie
- Black oxfords, pocket square
Correct for black tie optional, and you'll reuse it.
Bold color suit
- Royal blue, emerald or pastel suit
- White or black shirt
- Black shoes, minimal accessories
One bold piece; everything else quiet.
Matching your date
- Keep your suit neutral (black, navy, charcoal) so any color works with it.
- Pick one color from your date's outfit and repeat it once: tie, bow tie, pocket square or boutonniere.
- Similar, not identical. A shade close to the dress looks better than trying to match the exact fabric.
- Going with friends? Agree on one shared accent color for group photos.
Rent, buy or borrow?
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Rent | It's black tie and you'll wear a tux once | Book early in prom season; try it on as soon as you pick it up |
| Buy a suit | You'll reuse it for weddings, interviews and graduations | Budget for basic tailoring (sleeves and hem) |
| Borrow | A family member's suit fits you through the shoulders | Shoulders can't be altered much; everything else usually can |
The fit checklist
- Shoulders: the seam ends where your shoulder ends. No dents, no overhang.
- Jacket length: covers your seat.
- Sleeves: show a little shirt cuff, about a quarter to half an inch.
- Collar: you can slide two fingers in when it's buttoned.
- Trousers: sit on your shoe with little or no break.
- Shoes: black with a tux; black or brown with a suit. Dark socks that match your trousers.
The prom timeline
- 6–8 weeks out: find out the dress code; decide rent, buy or borrow; talk colors with your date.
- 4 weeks out: order or reserve; book any tailoring.
- 2 weeks out: full try-on with shoes; order the boutonniere or corsage.
- The day before: steam or press everything; polish shoes; lay it all out.
- On the night: undo the bottom jacket button, sit with it unbuttoned, and bring a phone charger.
Quick questions
What do guys wear to homecoming? Most homecoming dances are semi-formal: a dark suit with or without a tie, or a blazer with chinos. Casual still means a collar.
Do I need a tux for prom? Only if the prom is black tie. For black tie optional or semi-formal, a well-fitted dark suit with a tie is correct.
Should I match my date? Coordinate, don't copy: keep your suit neutral and repeat one color from their outfit.
Can I wear sneakers to prom? Some proms allow it. Choose clean, minimal leather sneakers and keep the rest sharp. For black tie, wear dress shoes.
