THE QUICK ANSWER

Take four measurements with a soft tape (bust or chest, waist, hips, foot length). Your size is the one whose chart covers your largest measurement for that garment: bust for tops, waist and hips for trousers, all three for dresses.

What about height and weight?

Height matters for length: it decides petite, regular or tall trousers, short/regular/long suit jackets, and the first number of a Chinese size code (165/88A means 165 cm tall). Weight doesn't appear in any national size standard, because it tells us nothing about where the body carries it. That's why the calculator asks for a tape measure, not the scales.

How we built these tables

Each country sizes clothes against a table of body measurements, so we compare countries through the body, not through the labels. UK, US and Australian women's sizes follow a large UK online retailer's published body chart; German, French and Italian sizes follow a large German retailer's chart (French is two numbers above German, Italian four). Japanese sizes follow the bust steps of the JIS standard, Chinese codes follow GB/T 1335 (height/bust or chest plus body type), and Korean sizes use the usual 44–99 (women) and 85–125 (men) chest numbers. Shoe sizes follow a major US sportswear brand's men's and women's charts.

Brands cut differently, so treat every result as your starting size and check the brand's own chart when it has one. Weight isn't part of any national size standard: two people of the same height and weight can be two sizes apart, so we use a tape measure, not the scales.

Questions people ask

How do I know what size I am?

Measure your bust or chest, waist and hips with a soft tape, then compare them with a size chart. Our calculator does the comparison for every country at once and tells you if you're between sizes.

Can I find my size from height and weight?

Not reliably. No national size system is based on weight, and two people with the same height and weight can be two sizes apart. Height helps choose short, regular or long lengths; the tape measure decides the size.

What is a size M in US women's sizes?

A women's M is usually US 8–10, UK 12–14 and EU 40–42, for a bust of roughly 91–98 cm (36–38.5 in).

What size is a men's medium?

A men's M usually fits a 38–40 in (97–102 cm) chest, a 38 or 40 suit jacket, and EU 48–50.

Why am I a different size in different shops?

Each brand builds its own size chart around its customers, and some size generously on purpose. Use your measurements and the brand's chart rather than the number on your last label.

Are European sizes the same in every country?

No. Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia share one system; France, Spain and Belgium run two numbers higher; Italy runs four numbers higher than Germany.
