THE QUICK ANSWER

Men's sizes are built on the chest. Your US/UK suit size is your chest in inches (rounded to an even number); add 10 for the EU/Italian size. A US M fits a 38–40 in chest; Japanese and Chinese M is usually a size smaller.

How we built these tables

Each country sizes clothes against a table of body measurements, so we compare countries through the body, not through the labels. UK, US and Australian women's sizes follow a large UK online retailer's published body chart; German, French and Italian sizes follow a large German retailer's chart (French is two numbers above German, Italian four). Japanese sizes follow the bust steps of the JIS standard, Chinese codes follow GB/T 1335 (height/bust or chest plus body type), and Korean sizes use the usual 44–99 (women) and 85–125 (men) chest numbers. Shoe sizes follow a major US sportswear brand's men's and women's charts.

Brands cut differently, so treat every result as your starting size and check the brand's own chart when it has one. Weight isn't part of any national size standard: two people of the same height and weight can be two sizes apart, so we use a tape measure, not the scales.

Questions people ask

What size is a men's medium?

A men's medium usually fits a 38–40 in (97–102 cm) chest. In suits that's a 38 or 40, and EU/Italian 48–50.

How do I convert US suit sizes to European?

Add 10: a US/UK 40 jacket is an EU or Italian 50.

What do S, R and L mean on a suit?

They're jacket lengths: Short for roughly under 5'8" (173 cm), Regular for 5'8"–6'0", Long for over 6'0" (183 cm). 40R is a 40 chest in regular length.

How are shirt collar sizes measured?

Measure round the base of your neck with a finger under the tape and round up to the next half inch. A 15.5 in collar is a 39–40 cm EU collar.

Why do Asian brands run small?

Japanese, Korean and Chinese letter sizes are set for local body measurements, so they're often one size smaller than US letters. Check the chest measurement, not the letter.

What does a Chinese size like 175/96A mean?

175 cm tall, 96 cm chest, A body type (average difference between chest and waist). Y means slimmer waist; B and C are fuller.

What does 3L mean in clothing sizes?

3L is a Japanese size one step above LL (Japan's XL). It fits a chest of about 112–120 cm (44–47 in), roughly a US XL to XXL. 4L is one step bigger, about a US 3XL.

What size is a 46 chest?

A 46 in (117 cm) chest is a men's XL in US letter sizes and a 46 suit jacket (EU/Italian 56). In Japanese sizing it's a 3L.
