THE QUICK ANSWER

  • The rule: start casual, then add one or two smart pieces.
  • Smart pieces: a blazer, tailored trousers, a crisp shirt, fine knitwear, a midi skirt, loafers or ankle boots.
  • Casual pieces that still work: dark jeans, a clean T-shirt and minimal leather trainers.
  • Skip: gym clothes, beachwear, ripped denim and worn-out shoes.

What smart casual means, by country

Smart casual is used across the English-speaking world, and it's searched about 33,100 times a month in both the UK and Australia. It's also one of the hardest codes to read. Debrett's calls it "often the hardest dress code to interpret". It notes that city events tend to be dressier than country ones and that a printed invitation suggests something more formal. Its safe choice for women is "a smart day dress with a jacket".

In the US, "business casual" is the more common workplace term. Smart casual is usually a little more relaxed than business casual and leaves more room for dark jeans and clean trainers.

Smart casual for dinner, work and events

  • Dinner: raise the fabric (silk, satin, fine knit) and the shoe (heels, polished flats or ankle boots).
  • Work: keep at least one tailored piece, such as trousers, a blazer or a structured skirt.
  • Daytime event: a shirt dress or a midi skirt with clean trainers, and a jacket in case of air conditioning.
  • Summer: linen trousers, a sleeveless shell and sandals with a back strap.
